Epoxy and Resin Pet Tags: One Proven Method

This guide documents one proven way to turn a printed QR insert into a finished resin tag. It is not the only way, and this site does not pretend otherwise — the code does not care what encases it, only that the insert honors the insert spec. If you already have a method that works, keep it. If you are starting from zero, this one holds up.

What you need

  • A verified code insert, printed from an insert sheet — one verified code, batch-printed up to 60 copies with hairline cut guides sized to your tag.
  • A laser printer, or an inkjet printer plus a sealer you trust.
  • Synthetic (polyester) paper if you want the most forgiving starting material.
  • UV-stable epoxy resin.
  • Whatever bezel, blank, or mold you already work with. We specify the insert, not the encasement.

Print

Toner is the safe default. Laser and toner prints are inert in epoxy — the resin can sit directly on them without reacting. Inkjet dye is the opposite: it can bleed the moment liquid resin touches it, unless the print is sealed first. If inkjet is what you have, plan on a sealing step and test one insert before committing a batch.

Synthetic polyester paper raises the floor further — it is waterproof before the resin ever touches it, so a soaked edge or a slow pour cannot ruin the insert on its own.

Print at 100% scale — the sheet carries a printed reminder, because a scaled-down print silently shrinks every module toward the point where scanning stops being reliable. Cut on the hairline guides. The quiet zone, the four modules of white the scanner needs on every side, lives inside the printed square, so the cut lines never touch it. There is no margin to shave for a tighter fit.

Seal

Two things need sealing: the face, if the print is inkjet, and the cut edges, always — unless the paper is synthetic. Fully sealed edges make an ordinary paper insert effectively permanent. Exposed fibers at a cut edge do the opposite: they wick water into the paper from the one place the resin did not reach. Seal the edges before the pour, or make certain the resin itself fully encapsulates them. Either works; a gap in both is how a tag dies from the rim inward.

Pour

Keep the code face flat or low-dome. A heavy dome of resin acts as a lens, and a lens distorts the modules near the edge of the code. If you want the deep, glassy, jewelry feel, dome the back of the tag instead. The finder's camera reads the front; the back can be as sculptural as you like.

Cure

Cure on the schedule your resin manufacturer specifies. Then scan the finished tag with a phone. The code was machine-verified before you could download it, but the cured tag is a new object — your print, your seal, your pour, your surface. If the finished piece scans, it ships. If it does not, one of the two failure modes below is usually why.

The two ways these tags fail

Edge wicking. The pour looks perfect, the tag ships, and months later water finds an exposed paper fiber at the rim. Wicking is slow and invisible until it is not. The fixes are all upstream: synthetic paper, sealed edges, or a pour that fully encapsulates the insert.

The lens dome. A code that verified perfectly can still fail in resin if a heavy dome sits over it, bending the outer modules out of shape. This failure is built in at the pour and no amount of rescanning fixes it. Flat or low-dome on the code face, always.

Sunlight

Ordinary resin yellows white backgrounds outdoors within a couple of years. It is cosmetic, not a scan failure — but on a tag you sold, it reads as wear. UV-stable resin keeps the white white.

One method, not the method

Lockets, glass cabochons, and laminate all make sound tags too — anything does, provided the insert keeps its size, its contrast, and its quiet zone.
